Munkhbolor Ganbold

Born in 1983 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Munkhbolor Ganbold is a contemporary Mongolian artist whose work reflects the social and cultural upheavals of Mongolia’s transitional period during the 1990s. He received his education at the Green Horse Contemporary Art School and the University of Arts and Culture in Mongolia before continuing his studies at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, Germany.

Following his time in Germany, Munkhbolor lived in Stockholm, Sweden for five years, where he held solo exhibitions at venues such as Edsvik Konsthall, Sergels Torg, and Gallery Haengmattan. In 2012, he returned to Ulaanbaatar and joined the Blue Sun Contemporary Art Group. In 2013, he co-founded the “Human Nature Love Freedom” art movement with a collective of artists, completing twelve public art projects by 2019.

Munkhbolor’s practice frequently incorporates found materials collected from streets, construction sites, and abandoned areas. He employs techniques of tearing, collaging, and reassembling to examine themes such as mortality, omens, particles, and the cosmos—reflecting both the resilience of living beings and the destructive forces of nature. His work has been exhibited internationally, including in Mongolia, the United States, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Germany. In 2017, he represented Mongolia at the 57th Venice Biennale with his work Karma of Eating, which addressed the ecological impact of the Mongolian cashmere goat industry.
