ABOUT
Text / Ministry of Culture Next Art Tainan 2025
Through a review of Tainan's geographical history, we can observe that the ever-changing coastline of Tainan is not only continuously undergoing transformation but also signifies that Tainan is a city gradually expanding toward the sea. Looking northward toward the Saltwater Creek, from the Sicao, Annan, all the way to the Qigu Lagoon and Peimen, the lagoon terrain still exists; here, the boundary between the ocean and the land appears remarkably blurred.
This year's "Tainan New Arts Award" aims to capture the organic and evolving characteristics of Tainan as the central theme for its curatorial direction. It also hopes to use the invited works to respond to Tainan's volatility and the city's water-based cultural history.
Lai Ko-Wei
Lai Ko-Wei's works often involve the use of molds to create pieces predominantly in ceramics and plastics. Through material transformations, extensive physical labor, and the collection of materials, Lai explores the blurred boundaries between space, dimension, value, identity, and systems. By delving into the contradictory relationships within states, the artist attempts to open up ambiguous imaginings.
