Hsing-Yu Chen

Hsing-Yu Chen works primarily with printmaking and installation. His work focuses on traces left behind in everyday life. He extracts subtle, often overlooked details and combines them with his own perceptual experience. Through this process, he seeks to draw new visual experiences from everyday remnants while reconsidering the hidden value contained within these fragments.

The series Traces is based on the artist’s collection of everyday marks that are frequently ignored. These weathered and peeling surfaces are often regarded as flaws that require removal or repair. Yet they are more than material residues, representing conditions shaped by the slow, continuous passage of time.

Through visual association, the artist connects the forms of these traces with the imagery of islands. When encountering these non-existent islands, viewers experience a feeling that is at once familiar and disorienting, as something seems known yet cannot be precisely located. By removing these traces from their everyday context, the work creates an ambiguous space between reality and fiction, inviting reflection on how we perceive subtle, fragmented presences that carry profound memories.
