Exhibition Statement

Wild Wild East centers on the image of the cowboy, but shifts away from its American symbolism toward something more internal: an exploration of self rather than the setting. Tez Kim’s cowboy embodies freedom without boundaries, solitude that doesn’t feel lonely, and the thrill of becoming whoever you want to be. Like a child dressing up and stepping into a role, these artworks capture a playful spirit where boldness comes easily, and identity feels fluid as something that can shift and expand beyond the limit.

Beneath this playfulness, a subtle tension adds weight and character to the artworks. The cowboy outfit appears expressive and free, while something inside remains more reserved. Shaped by everyday expectations and social norms, this quiet restraint holds things in place, even as an explosive energy builds up. In their eyes, a mischievous and rebellious spark that doesn’t ask for permission hints at something wilder underneath. Through a lens of youth and innocence, Wild Wild East approaches self-expression as something curious and still unfolding: it is less about certainty, and more about the journey of self-discovery.
